During the nineteenth century, Altata Bay was home to a coastal port that was connected by railroad to Navolato and Culiacán, the main cities in the central area of the State of Sinaloa.
Today, the port of Altata serves as a fishing harbor and a popular holiday resort for the people of Navolato and Culiacan.

In 1998, after five years of negotiations, a group of private investors from Culiacán formed a company with the original owners of the land in the Lucenilla peninsula: The Ejido El Tetuan, The objective was to develop the tourism industry in the area.
